The graduation show of Fine Art students is the flagship of TAF.

Invitations to our international partners are on their way now. The fourth International Week of Tampere Art Factory will be celebrated April 11-15, one month earlier than earlier.
The International Week is followed by Tampere Art Factory opening weekend April 15-16.

This blog has hibernated for quite a while, but is about to wake up and full with action again as of January. Stay tuned!

Kutsut kansainvälisille partnereillemme ovat lähdössä. Neljättä Tampere Art Factoryn kansainvälistä viikkoa juhlitaan 11.-15.4, kuukautta aikaisempaa aiemmin.

The next Tampere Art Factory Festival will blossom out mid-April, but the inhabitants of TAF - the Fine Art, Film&Television and Media students at TAMK Finlayson campus are active around the year.

Seuraava Tampere Art Factory festivaali puhkeaa kukkaan huhtikuun puolivälissä, mutta TAFfin asukkaat, TAMKin Finlaysonin campuksen kuvataiteen, elokuvan&television ja median opiskelijat ahkeroivat läpi vuoden.

TAF Marketing happenings in schools

TAF marketing events in schools are over. We Film & TV first year students 
brightened up, gave things to talk about or at least  caused confusion at 
the corridors of Tampereen yhteiskoulun lukio, Sammon keskuslukio and 
Tammerkosken lukio highschools. We had every time with us a laptop, an 
extra screen and loudspeakers. We presented the TTVO's showreel of the 
films made  there and new TAF advertisements. We learned a lot on our 
moments of presentations and the job seemed like routine for the third 
time. I Sami S. Salminen and Jenni Mäkelä were present on every visit. 
Everybody made an effort of their best for Tampere Art Factory. Into 
Hiltunen managed the driving and were enthusiastic about sound producing 
with me. Jenni took care most of the oral presentation and talked the 
targets into our table. Emma Ketonen was dealing with the candy for the 
claws of the children or the childish youngsters. I communicated with 
the schools and pushed some buttons. Extra power to our group gave the 
streetcredible and exemplary students Emmi Myllärinen (at Tammerkosken 
lukio) and  Terhi Romo (at Tampereen yhteiskoulu). We had lots of fun 
and I hope the joy were showing out. I hope that some of the highscool 
students will come and make the happening happen.








TAF markkinointitempaukset kouluihin ovat ohitse. Me Elokuvan & TV:n 
ensimmäisen vuoden opiskelijat piristimme, annoimme puhuttavaa tai 
aiheutimme vähintään hämmennystä Tampereen yhteiskoulun, Sammon ja 
Tammerkosken lukioden käytävillä. Mukanamme oli aina pöydälle 
laitettavat kaiuttimet, läppäri ja näyttö, jossa esitimme Taf-mainoksia 
ja TTVO:n showreeliä siellä tehdyistä elokuvista. Opimme paljon 
esittelyhetkistämme ja kolmannella kerralla homma tuntui jo rutiinilta. 
Minä Sami S. Salminen ja Jenni Mäkelä olimme läsnä jokaisella käynnillä. 
Jokainen kantoi kortensa kekoon ja antoi oman työpanoksensa Tampere Art 
Factoryn hyväksi. Into Hiltunen hoiti autoilun ja innosti nostetta 
äänistä kanssani. Jenni hoiti suullisesta esittelystä ja kohteiden 
houkuttelemisesta suurimman osan paikkojen päällä. Emma Ketonen huolehti 
karkit lasten ja lastenmielisten nuorten kahmittaviksi. Hoidin koulujen 
kanssa kommunikaation ja vääntelin nappeja. Lisäytyä ryhmäämme toi 
Tammerkosken lukiolla katu-uskottavat mallioppilaat Emmi Myllärinen ja 
TYK:ssä Terhi Romo. Meillä ainakin oli hauskaa ja toivomme, että se 
hauskuus välittyi koululaisiin ja osa heistä tulee tapahtumaan tai on 
tapahtumassa.

Fiat Lux - Let There Be Light

Usually when one takes a photograph he wants it to be perfect. The work behind one picture can sometimes reach unthinkable measures! This is of course often necessary when aiming for an image that you want to use for commercial purposes. But what if you want to document something of our daily lives? What will you find out about us if you´ re looking at a picture that has been built up? Alexander Lembke (GER) is gladly answering these questions. By the aid of Markus Jokelas pictures, Alexander shows us the real meaning of documenting a normal family and their daily routines at different points of the hour.

Alexander points out that the use of light and positioning of the camera is certainly important when capturing a moment but it doesn´t have to be done in a conventional way. Markus Jokelas pictures opens up the door to a world seen by our own naked eye in a scene that hasn´t been built up but instead captured from any moment in our lives.
The task for workshop for yesterday was to take a picture of the moments of awakenings, some people are sleepy and grumpy in the mornings, some are vigorous morning persons who wants to get going early in the morning. By the use of the right light and style of capturing the moment one should be able to bring out the difference of these two. The three day long workshop contains of different tasks every day.




Täydellisen valokuvan ottaminen on äärimmäisen vaativaa ja aikaavievää. Kuvan värien, valojen ja asetelman on oltava kohdallaan, varsinkin jos kuvan käyttötarkoitus on kaupallinen. Mitäs jos haluatkin dokumentoida meidän jokaisen normaalia elämää? Minkälaisen käsityksen meistä voi saada mikäli kuvan ottamiseen on käytetty aikaa valon ja tilanteen asetteluun? Alexander Lembke (GER) vastaa mielellään näihin kysymyksiin. Markus Jokelan valokuvia hyödyntäen Alexander tuo esille valon käytön tärkeyden sekä tilanteen ymmärtämisen niin kamerakäsittelyssä kuin linssivalinnassakin. Jokelan kuvissa ilmenee taidokkaasti perhe-elämän arki normaalin sivustakatsojan perspektiivistä katsottuna. Kuvissa ei ilmene että valokuvaaja on ollut läsnä vaan tilanteet ovat kulkeutuneet normaalisti päivärutiinien mukaan.
Työpajan tehtävä oli edellä mainittuja oppeja hyväksikäyttäen vangita tilanne heräämisestä. Ihmiset ovat erilaisia aamulla, toiset vetävät tiukemmin peittoa korville ja odottavat päivän etenemistä ja toiset ovat aamuvirkkuina täydessä touhussa kukonlaulun aikaan. Kuvattavan tilanteen on tuotava näiden kahden tilanteen eriäväisyydet esille. Kolmipäiväinen työpaja tuo joka päivälle uuden tehtävän.

Visuvaara on julistettu! Visual design final works on show

In the entrance hall of TAMK School of Art and Media you find the exhibition of graduating visual design students. The exhibition is open over the weekend.

Valmistuvat visuaalisen suunnittelun opiskelijat eli visut ovat koko nelivuotisen opiskelunsa ajan joutuneet vastaamaan kysymykseen siitä, mitä visut oikeastaan tekevät. Tämä kysymys saa tyhjentävän vastauksen, kun Finlaysonin kampuksen sisääntuloaula täyttyy visujen taidonnäytteistä.

Nähtävillä on materiaalia todella monipuolisista opinnäytetyöprojekteista. Silmäniloa tarjoillaan muun muassa animaation, efektoinnin, käyttöoppaan, sekä painokuosi- ja fonttisuunnittelun muodossa. 

On tullut aika näyttää, miten monipuoliseen ilmaisuun visujen taidot taipuvat. Tule tutustumaan, mutta varo - visut ovat irti!

Visuvaara on nähtävissä Pesurummussa, eli Finlaysonin kampuksen sisääntuloaulassa, 4.6. asti.

TAF -markkinointitempaus vappuaattona

Vappuaattona 30.4. TAFin markkinointiryhmä pystytti telttakatoksen Tampereen Jugendtorille ja ohjasi pahaa-aavistamattomia ihmisiä sisään teltan uumeniin. Telttaan astuville ihmisille kerrottiin peitetarina tekemästämme sosiaalisen median tutkimuksesta: Kuinka internetin välityksellä käyty keskustelu eroaa normaalista sosiaalisesta kanssakäymisestä; Onko se helpompaa vai vaikeampaa jne. Tämän tutkimusryhmä saisi muka selville tarkkailemalla kahden ennalta toisilleen tuntemattoman henkilön välistä keskustelua web-kameroiden välityksellä.

Teltan sisällä "tutkimukseen" mukaan lähteneitä henkilöitä odotti tietokone, jonka ruudulla näkyi heidän tuleva keskustelukumppaninsa. Uhrille annettiin käsitys, että vastakkaisessa päässä oleva henkilö on myöskin kadulta sattumanvaraisesti poimittu, vastaavanlaisessa kopissa kököttävä henkilö kuin uhri itse. Todellisuudessa uhrin näkemä henkilö oli Tampereen Ammattikorkeakoulun opiskelija, joka leikki juonessa mukana TAMKin Finlaysonin kampuksen lavastetussa studiossa. Eipä aikaakaan, kun autuaan tietämättömät ihmisparat saisivat kokea jotain ennalta-arvaamatonta.

Keskustelu alkoi jokaisen uuden uhrin kohdalla webbikameroiden välityksellä normaaliin tapaan: "Kuka sä oot?"; "Missä sä oot?"; "Mikä tää juttu on?"; "Mitä meinaat tehdä vappuna?" jne. Henkilöille annettiin 1-2 minuuttia aikaa tutustua toisiinsa ja rentoutua. Tämän jälkeen TAFin markkinointiryhmä toteutti TTVO:n studiossa järjestämänsä tempauksen. Uhri saattoi nähdä, kuinka hänen keskustelukumppaninsa taustalla valtava seinä kaatui hädissään huutavan ihmisparan päälle; Tai kuinka kaksi kiihkeää miesstripparia järjesti yllättäen eksoottisen shown tms!

Markkinointiryhmä kuvasi studioon järjestetyt tempaukset sekä "tutkimushenkilöiden" riemastuttavat reaktiot, jotka ne ovat nähtävänä Tampere Art Factory - tapahtuman yhteydessä TAMKin Taiteen ja viestinnän tiloissa Finlaysoninkatu 7:ssä pe ja la 7.-8.5.

Veera Niemi - TAF Tekninen tuottaja/Technical Manager

I’m Veera Niemi, a graduating student from the Tampere University of Applied Sciences. I study on the sound department. I’ve done many kinds of projects from multicameras to short films and documents to events, music recording and mixing… and now I’m the technical manager of TAF 10.

My job is to take care of the workshop equipments and other light, sound and presentation equipments that are needed during TAF. I have gathered up a technical group from first year students of film and television programme as a part of their course of events production and also as a part of my thesis.

I hope I will see You during TAF 10, even though I might be running from TTVO to TR1 and from Demola to Klubi. Yeah!

Hei, olen Veera Niemi, valmistuva äänipuolen opiskelija Tampereen ammattikorkeakoulusta. Olen tehnyt monenlaisia projekteja aina monikamerasta lyhytelokuviin ja tapahtumista musiikin äänittämiseen, ja nyt olen TAF 10:n teknisenä tuottajana. Työni on huolehtia työpajojen tarvitsemista laitteistosta ja niiden toimivuudesta sekä muusta TAF:iin liittyvästä valo-, ääni- ja esityskalustosta.

Olen koonnut ensimmäisen vuoden elotv-opiskelijoista teknisen työryhmän osana heidän tapahtumatuottamisen kurssiaan ja omaa opinnäytetyötäni.

Toivon, että näen teidät TAF 10:ssä, vaikka itse joudunkin juoksemaan TTVO:n, TR1:n, Demolan ja Klubin väliä vielä monesti. Jea!

Korean Wave at TAF - Korean aalto TAFfissa

One of the partner delegations visiting our International Week is the group of professors and students coming from the Chung-Ang University, the Korean top university for photography.

The guests bring with them the Korean Wave photography exhibition. The exhibition has already been shown last year at Month of Photography in Bratislava, Slovakia and will be seen later this year at Galerie Lampingstrasse, Bielefeld, Germany.

Yksi TAMKin Tampere Art Factory -festivaalin näyttelyistä on Chung-Ang yliopiston (Seoul) opiskelijoiden valokuvanäyttely Korean aalto - Korean Wave. Näyttely on jo vieraillut viime vuonna Slovakian Bratislavassa ja jatkaa Tampereelta Saksan Bielefeldtiin.

Are You Talking to Me? Workshop started on Tuesday

The communication between people today has grown into an easy web constructed by links and cameras that can be held in every work environment and household threw out the world.
Alex Reuneker and Patrick Deters (NL) want to share with us the art of using web cams as a conversation tool between people or even communities. ARE YOU TALKING TO ME is an exciting workshop where the participants have the possibility to build a platform where a group of people can detain information through the use of two web cams. Alex started the morning by showing the numerous possibilities one can build by using the right script. The interactive participation via a webcam is a really interesting tool for the upcoming marketing generation. Patrick emphasised the importance of marketing and he especially pointed out the use of targeting and segmentation.

Kommunikointimahdollisuuksien valtava kehitys on antanut ihmisille ja yhteisöille mahdollisuuden interaktiiviseen kanssakäymiseen ympäri maailman.
Alex Reuneker ja Patrick Deters (HOL) ovat täällä kertomassa meille web cam:n käytöstä keskustelu- sekä markkinointikanavana. ARE YOU TALKING TO ME? – Työpajan aikana rakennettavan platformin tehtävänä on saada kaksi ryhmittymää interaktiiviseen kanssakäyntiin kahta web cam:a käyttäen.
Alex aloitti aamun näyttämällä miten kameralla saadaan aikaiseksi erilaisia efektejä ja reaktioita hyödyntämällä kahden kameran tekniikkaa. Kaikki tämä syntyy käyttämällä oikeata koodausta.
Miksi sitten tarvitaan interaktiivista kanssakäyntiä web cam:n avulla? Patrickin osuudessa vastaus löytyikin; markkinointi! Web cam:n käyttö tuotteiden, palveluiden tai informaation markkinoinnissa on todella tehokas tapa, varsinkin kun annetaan vielä mahdollisuus osallistua tilanteen ostopäätökseen interaktiivisesti.
Työpajan valmiit ohjelmat markkinointisuunnitelmineen ovat nähtävillä perjantaina 7.5 klo 12.00.

Innovative interaction design concepts incl. an internet radio for broadcasting your own junk messages on-line, virtual graffiti on Tampere's Google Street View, chic and luxurious spam for serious viral marketing campaigns and playful junk mail activity visualizations are all results of an intensive, one-day workshop DESIGN SPAM by Pawel Pokutycki (Academie Minerva, Groningen NL), a part of the TAMK School of Art and Media International Week 2010.

Workshops started successfully - Kansainvälisen viikon workshopit onnistuneesti alkuun

Interactive Cinema

Chris Hales pääsi - pienten teknisten vaikeuksien jälkeen - onnistuneesti esittelemään tulevan viikon ohjelmistoa interaktiivisen elokuvan työpajasta. Chris painotti interaktiivisen elokuvan tärkeyttä yhä kehittyvämmässä mediaympäristössä ja pahoitteli huonoa saatavuutta ympäri maailmaa.
Mitä sitten interaktiivinen elokuva on? Kyseessä on mediamuoto, jossa yksi tai useampi katsoja vaikuttaa elokuvan kulkuun omalla toiminnallaan. Chris näytti loistavia esimerkkejä, joissa saadaan kuvassa oleva tapahtuma reagoimaan äänellä, valolla tai liikkeellä.
Tulevan viikon työpaja tulee olemaan ryhmälle hauska ja haasteellinen heidän kuvatessaan omia lyhytelokuviaan, joissa yhdessä yleisön kanssa vaikutetaan elokuvan kulkuun.
Valmiiden projektien esittelytilaisuus on perjantaina 7.5. klo 12.00 TTVO:lla Teatterissa, 2. krs.


Interactive Cinema Workshop

Chris Hales opened the first day of his workshop by talking briefly about the importance of interactive cinema amongst the growing media business in the world. He emphasized the fact that the form of interactive communication with the audience threw the screen is still not a very common form of film making.
What is interactive cinema? Simply when the audience is affecting the outcome of the movie by its action, this can be made either by sound, light or movement.
The task given to the workshop for this week will be fun and demanding. The group will film during the week interactive short films where the audiencehave the chance to affect the movie.
The shows will be on display at the Theater, 2nd floor on Friday 7th at 12.00pm.

Nou & Herkauw

VJ:n työ on monelle meistä vielä outo käsite, visual jockey on nimensä mukaisesti mukana esityksessä tai keikalla vaikuttamassa tunnelman kulkuun kuvatehostein. Adri Schokker Hollannista avasi päivän loistavasti kertomalla työpajan otsikon merkityksen. Nou & herkauw on suoraan käännettynä ”nyt & märehtiminen”, tällä sanomalla Adri halusi painottaa elävän kuvan merkitystä varsinkin, kun se on otettu uudelleen miksattuna eli ”märehdittynä” käyttöön siten, että se on suunniteltu annettua tunnelmaa varten.
Viikon työpajan aikana työryhmän tehtävänä on tuottaa visuaalinen materiaali perjantaina KLUBI:lla järjestettäviin bileisiin.

Nou &Herkauw
The work of a VJ is still little new for the everyday consumer. Visual Jockey is the artist behind all the moving images at a party, dance club or any other venue where visual ambience is needed. Adri Schokker (NL) opened the day by explaining to his audience the meaning of workshop’s title.
Nou & Herkauw is literally directly translated “Now & Ruminate” . By this he wanted to point out the facts that the key material that is used for VJ´s around the world is already used material which is transformed into another format that is rhythmically in balance with the given atmosphere.
The final object for the workshop is to build a mind blowing show for the upcoming TAF -party at restaurant KLUBI on Friday, 7th of May.

Taf Magazine out before 1st May

Taf Magazine 2010 is soon out, and this year a few pages are published in English! The magazine, produced by a journalism course, highlights the recent success stories, international projects, artworks, films and everyday life at the School of Art and Media.

The editor in chief was Niina Virtanen, who also took the cover photo. Layout was designed by Riina Vendelin and most of the photos are by Tuomas Jaakkola. The other editorial team: Sanna Hakanurmi, Saara Kallio, Suvi Tuuli Kataja, Jenni Liikaoja, Johanna Peltola, Esa Nikkilä, Hanna-Mari Suutari, Tiia Vestola and Pertti Näränen as a teacher.

The editors also want to thank other writers and helpers: Tuuli Juntunen, Emmi Nuorgam, Aino Sepponen, Eeva-Kaisa Ahlamo, Annika Tenho, Eero Alava. The heading font was designed by graduate Kaisa Pennanen as her final thesis project.

”A Story of Memories, love and letting go. There are two great loves in the life of old Aleksi: his wife Saila and The Camera. After the sudden death of Saila, Aleksi gets a chance to participate in a medical experiment prolonging his life far past its natural end. Alessia Giugno presentation

Hello everybody!

I´m Alessia Giugno, an Italian student who came in Tampere for an exchange experience.
I came here in August and I was supposed to stay only six months but considering that I like living in Tampere, I have extended for other three months, so that I´ll be studying here till May. Tourism and events communication are the two fields of study I´m really interested in and I have chosen the first like my major subject.
In March I started my work placement in Tamk University of Applied Sciences,under the supervision of the Professor Cai Melakoski, the Head of the Media Degree Programme .
My role is to take care about the external communication of the International Week that will take place in May (from the 3rd to the 7th) and to manage all the practical staff concerning hotel arrangements, how to reach Tampere, what you can do in your free time and so forth.
I´ll be very happy to help you and to answer to all your questions.

International Week&TAF Workshop: How to Create Tension in Fiction Film

The last but not least of the seven International Week workshops we present is hosted by Cristina Perales and Rosa Pons from University of Vic, Barcelona. They illustrate the workshop:

The  workshop we will offer at International Week 2010 of TAF, How to Create Tension in Fiction Film, will be focused on the relation between shooting and dramatic tension.

Frequently we work on large or short shoots and its value inside the story, and sometimes the result of this combination has nothing to be with the idea or aim written in the script. Our proposal let us to study and define vectors inside the scene following the intention of the script-writing and this brings up to a coherence in the audiovisual narration using cinematography visual expression possibilities.

International Week Workshop&TAF: Fiat Lux - Let There Be Light

„Availabe light is any kind of light I can get my hands on“ (W. Eugene Smith)

Using additional flash light in photography is one possibility to divide light from darkness. It can be a tool to alter the appearance of the scene being photographed in different ways. For example can it be used as main light, as fill light or it can even mimic the behavior of ambient light. But before we are able to use flash light in a way that adds to instead of destracting our picture we have to discover the different applications and qualities of it.

Using supplementary light is not merely a matter of adding more illumination to the scene. There are questions raised that go beyond technical considerations. Additional Flash light can have a profound effect on a subjects behavior. All eyes will turn towards us after we intrude to a scene and just fire a flash. We have to be aware of this fact. The presence of the flash can be even conspicuous to the point where it actually becomes an actor.

The workshop "Fiat Lux" is meant as a practical and theoretical introduction to flash photography and we will learn more about its unique properties. Students have the possibility to discuss images made by different photographers and different concepts of flash photography and they can apply their gained knowledge toward shooting assignments to perform with Digital SLR and additional flash units.

International Week Workshop and TAF: Nou&Herkauw

Nou&Herkauw@TAF'09

Nou&Herkauw is a collective of artists and students who work in several disciplines such as media art, graphic design, illustration, and theatre. In collaboration with students of the Academy for Popculture they develop all kinds of interactive VJ performances for cultural events and dance events through out Holland.

The setup of Nou&Herkauw is most similar to an OpenLab. The basic idea of a performance is that it starts with totally nothing and that all the visual content is created on the spot during the event. This can be anything! What starts with nothing evolutes to one big dynamic composition of animations, looped sketches, errors, mobile phone streams, live paintings, and so on. Projected on screens or walls in the rhythm of the music of the DJ’s or musicians. The visitors of the event are invited to participate and become makers in this collective creative process.

Idea for TAF
In the workshop during the international week of TAF, Nou&Herkauw will develop a live performance for official TAF party at Friday the 7th of May. The Lab of Nou&Herkauw is a collection of different low-tech/high-tech techniques and modules, that all together form the setup in which artists and visitors can create their visuals. 
Examples of different modules are: Animation tools, cameras, twitter based vj tools, etc. The objective of the workshop is to develop a collection of modules and techniques, which combined form an OpenLab at the TAF party. The students will develop and also perform their concepts.


The objectives of the workshop are:

• An exchange of ideas, experience and knowledge between international students.
• Gaining more knowledge of developing and realising interactive performance concepts.
• An introduction to VJ techniques and culture, creative programming (Isadora, Processing, Max/Msp Jitter), and theatre performance.
• Establish a durable collaboration trajectory between the participating students and universities.

Adri Schokker, teacher at the Academy for Popculture and creative artist at Nou&Herkauw will host the workshop. There will also be students from the Academy of Popculture and other international students.

Sold Out is the exhibition of 19 artists who graduate this spring from the Degree Programme in Fine Art of Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK). The opening of the exhibition is one of the highlights of Tampere Art Factory festival.
